Thousands are signing up for the challenge, will you be one of them?
With 2017 coming to a close, so begins the new year- and with that comes resolutions to start living better. And for many, this includes the move to turn to a plant-based, vegan diet.
According to UK charity Veganuary, some 80,000 have already chosen to eschew all animal foods such as meat (including fish and shellfish), dairy, eggs and honey in the coming month by signing up to the month-long campaign which encourages people to try being vegan for all of January.
The charity provides endless lists of recipes, restaurant chains, supermarkets and tips for getting all your recommended vitamins and minerals, leaving you with no excuses to commit to the challenge.
These rising numbers mirror a wider global interest, with awareness building massively over the last decade. In the UK alone the number of those who identify as vegan has risen by more than 350 per cent, making it one of the fastest-growing lifestyle movements to take hold.
More and more people are ditching animal products in order to combat specific health problems. Others report general improvements in energy and vitality, and exclaim that they’ve ‘never felt better’. Stories of successful vegan athletes and sports stars are on the increase, and plant-based living is regularly profiled in health and wellness publications. The British Dietetic Association confirms: ‘well-planned vegan diets can support healthy living in people of all ages’.
Five stand-up comedians have already joined the Veganuary campaign, including Carl Donnelly, Romesh Ranganathan, Sara Pascoe, Michael Legge and Andrew O’Neill.
So with the new year upon us, what better time to commit to Veganuary?
