The rise of vegan beauty

Veganism has fast become one of the biggest worldwide trends. According to The Vegan Society, there are now estimated to be over half a million vegans in the UK. The movement is vast, and it’s on the rise, most notably making a big step over the past year from what we put into our bodies to what we put onto our skin.

The number of vegans in Britain has increased from 150,000 to more than 540,000, according to the Vegan Society, fuelled by younger people, aged 16-34, who account for nearly half that number. From beeswax in lip balm, animal fat in eyeshadows, and crushed cochineal (beetles) in red lipsticks, it comes as no surprise to find out more and more people are turning their attention to vegan and cruelty-free products.

The beauty bag is the latest accessory that’s making moves in the world of veganism. As more and more people are turning away from their most-prized skincare and makeup products due to their ingredients containing animal by-products of some sort, vegan beauty – make-up and skincare products made entirely without animal by-products – has become big news for vegans and non-vegans alike.

The cruelty-free and vegan movement has well and truly exploded. And Ethea is a platform to showcase these products. Beauty powerhouse Superdrug has reported a significant increase in interest in vegan beauty over the last year, with a 20 per cent increase in vegan products across both make-up and skincare.

Sarah Gardner, Superdrug Head of Beauty said: ‘In the last year we’ve seen a huge increase in the demand for people searching for Vegan beauty and skincare products. Customers are becoming savvier about how products are tested and what ingredients are in their favourite products.’

Global market research providers Mintel also reported that 13 per cent of beauty and personal products launched so far in 2017 carried a vegan claim, up from just six per cent in 2015.

If it’s time for a spring clean of your make up bag, turn your attention to the ingredients list, too. There may be some ingredients in your prized beauty products that take you by surprise. As well as being kinder to animals, and the environment, vegan make up also contains incredibly powerful natural ingredients that are kind to your skin. Vegan beauty products are usually made with fewer ingredients and this, combined with all-natural formulas, make these products so increasingly highly sought-after. Vegan beauty products are a lot less harsh and a lot more soothing on your skin, so ideal for those with sensitive skin, or conditions such as rosacea and acne.

Have style, and beauty, with a conscience in 2018 and make Ethea your go-to one-stop shop.
